3-on-3 Hockey: Overtime All the Time

A professional hockey league built for speed, skill, and non-stop entertainment.

Who We Are

3ICE is a professional 3-on-3 hockey league entering its fourth season. The league features eight teams, each coached by a Hockey Hall of Famer or Stanley Cup champion, competing in a fast-paced format that delivers non-stop action.

For the 2026 season, 3ICE has relocated to Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa — bringing world-class hockey to America's heartland. Teams compete across the season for the coveted Patrick Cup (nicknamed "the Patty"), while the league's leading scorer each round is awarded the Golden Helmet.

Beyond the men's league, 3ICE is expanding with three new initiatives: an international World Cup competition scheduled for Belfast in summer 2026, youth programming (3ICE Kids), and an open tournament format (3ICE Open).

3ICE 101 — The Rules

The Format

Each team fields 3 skaters plus a goalie. Games consist of two 8-minute halves with a running clock. The result is wide-open ice, constant scoring chances, and a pace that never lets up.

Penalties

There are no traditional power plays. When a penalty is called, the non-offending team is immediately awarded a penalty shot. No lineup changes, no faceoffs — just an instant one-on-one showdown.

Overtime & Shootouts

If the game is tied at the end of regulation, it goes directly to a shootout. There is no overtime period — keeping the event moving and the crowd engaged.

Offsides

There are no video challenges or replays for offsides calls. The officials make the call on the ice and play continues. Speed and flow are prioritized over review.

Unique Rule: Puck Off Netting

If the puck rebounds off the protective netting behind the goal, play continues — it is not blown dead. This keeps the action going and creates unexpected scoring opportunities.

Leadership

3ICE is led by a team of hockey legends and experienced sports executives:

Commissioner Craig Patrick — Hall of Famer, three-time Stanley Cup winner as GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and member of one of hockey's most storied families.

Deputy Commissioner Ed Johnston — Former NHL goaltender, GM, and coach with decades of hockey operations experience.

CEO E.J. Johnston — Leads business operations, partnerships, and the league's expansion into youth hockey and international competition.
